As I round the corner of my road after my daily brisk walk, I spot them: a gaggle of people standing on the pavement not far from Priscilla’s house, obviously talking but staying apart from each other too. In our street, at least, it seems to have become second nature to keep our distance now; we do it without thinking twice.

My heart skips a little because they are near Priscilla’s house, still with remnants of removed police tape on the lampposts and gateposts. Priscilla. The victim. I’d been tempted more than once to call the hospital to find out how she is and/or if she is going to recover, but there is no way for me to do that without the police potentially finding out it was me who called via tracing the call to the hospital. They probably wouldn’t do that, but they might. I remember seeing on a television show, or maybe reading in a book, that people who try to find out too much about the condition of someone they’re not close to are more likely to be investigated and are often found to be the perpetrator.

And I do not want the police to notice, let alone open, any can of worms when it comes to me. Nor Priscilla and me.

A week ago, I came back from my morning constitutional, as Grayson calls it, and saw Priscilla preparing to ignore me. She may have been right about me being a terrible mother but I hadn’t actually done anything. It wasn’t me who she’d uncovered all that stuff about. And it wasn’t nearly as bad as it might have seemed all written down in that book of hers. And let’s not forget how she came across that information. How nefarious it was that she even knew that much. I wanted to tell her that. Not the part about her behaving in a nefarious manner – I wasn’t going to bring that up unless I had to, but the rest of it. I wanted to let her know that it wasn’t all bad. I knew she was concerned for my children but she had no need to be, not really. I had come up with a plan and I was executing it. And also, Grayson just wasn’t like that. Honestly. I was trying to appeal to the woman who had spoken so gently to me and who was caring and empathetic. It mattered what she thought of me. I’m not sure why, but it did.

‘Can we talk?’ I asked over the wall that fenced off her house from the pavement; the lavender reached up and out over the wall to separate us like green and lilac net curtains.

She looked down her nose at me; she was so good at that – making you feel small and insignificant without uttering a word or twisting her face.

‘I don’t think that would be a good idea,’ she stated. She was speaking to me and that was actually more than I expected.
